Caring for our catchment
Using eDNA technology to highlight platypus & rakali across the Wollombi catchment to invest in catchment health and involving local community.
Enabling citizen scientist to discover species in their own backyard!
Hunter Local Land Services is working with interested landholders to:
1) Survey the catchment for key species including Platypus and Rakali (native water rat).
2) Coorinate two environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling programs with the community and schools to determine the presence of platypus and rakali (native water rat) in the Wollombi Brook catchment.
3) From the survey and eDNA results, invest in improving habitat in the catchment for these key species and riparian health.
This exciting project is part of the Iconic Riparian Species Program being undertaken in the Wollombi Brook catchment from 2023-2027, funded by the NSW Government’s Environmental Trust and Hunter Catchment Contributions.
